What is #refusethestraw?

You may have seen a video of a poor sea turtle with a single use plastic straw stuck in it's nose doing the rounds on Twitter and Facebook. Maybe you've looked over someones shoulder while they watch it on the tube. If you have yet to see it you can click here but be warned that it contains upsetting and graphic content with some strong language. This video refelects the harsh reality that 175 billion single-use plastic straws are entering landfill and littering our waterways and oceans every year, and we need to start doing something about it.

If you’re ordering a drink at a bar, ask for no straw with your drink. There’s nothing more to it.

Even big names are on board to help!

It's not clear who sparked the movement but it's certainly got traction. Even big brands are on board to refuse the straw. Drinking Trends cites that "Ian McLaren, Director of Trade Advocacy for Bacardi brands announced a ban on using plastic straws on any Bacardi portfolio brand events globally. That includes not only Bacardi Rum, but Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire and many more."

It's easy!

If you're ordering a drink at a bar, ask for no straw with your drink. There's nothing more to it.

If you're bartending, then you can choose to stop adding a straw to drinks as standard. It's a practice we've been using since we started. We bought 2 boxes of straws last year and have yet to buy more.

If we all work together to #refusethestraw then we can help reduce the amount of plastic waste entering our oceans.
